Five Reasons Why You Should Book an In-Home Newborn Session
When I think of ‘home’ I am instantly filled with a sense of comfort and peace. It’s where I make my morning Nespresso, snuggle with my two cats, Dewy and Ralph, cozy up in front of the fireplace with a book, share meals with my husband and ultimately spend a majority of life’s best moments. The house that we currently live in is the first home we purchased together and I know that one day we'll look back on these days with fond memories, even if being a new first-time homeowner of a 100 year-old house can sometimes drive us crazy. My home is my family’s place of refuge and I know it’s that way for many other people too.
Although I am not a parent, I can imagine that mama’s and daddy’s of new little ones feel the same way about their home, but even stronger. They get to welcome a new, beautiful baby into their home. Home is made even more special when this happens. For this reason, and a few others I will list below, I think you should consider booking an in-home newborn session.
Here’s why I think you should consider an in-home newborn session:
There’s No Need to Travel
Gathering all of the gear and supplies needed to get mama, the newborn and the whole rest of the family out the door for photos can be a huge endeavor. If you chose to do in-home newborn pictures, I come to you! It takes a lot of the hassle and work out of getting your pictures taken away. All you have to do is get everyone dressed and then I do the rest. You get all the goodness of a studio-quality newborn session without leaving your house!
Siblings and Other Family Members are Most Happy at Home
If you have other children, taking photos in their element makes it a bit easier on them. I know it is already a huge adjustment for a big brother or sister when a new baby comes home. Sometimes their relationships are instantly amazing and other times they take a bit to warm up to their new sibling. If we are in your home, all of their toys and snacks are readily available to help them feel relaxed and more comfortable.
You Are the Most Comfortable at Home
When you are in the comfort of your own home, everything you need for mama and the newborn are already right there. All of the baby supplies (clothes, diapers, bottles, burp rags, pacifiers) are all easy to access so you can easily get the baby what they need. When baby needs to, we can easily take a break and all supplies and their extra are handy. If you are a nursing mom, an in-home session allows you to feed baby in your favorite chair, comfortably in your home and not out in public or in a foreign space.
My friends and family members who have brought newborn babies home talk about how much they enjoy their own little newborn bubble and I want you to take advantage of that bubble! Giving birth is obviously extremely taxing on mom and a huge adjustment for the rest of the family. Being in your ‘newborn bubble’ at home, allows you to feel as calm as you can. Even if you aren’t used to having your pictures taken, you’ll begin to relax more quickly at home.
Home is Where the Little Things Become the Big Things…Hear Me Out
Having your newborn photos taken in a studio is great, and you can capture absolute magic in a space that is perfectly lit with all of the right decor. But, where we spend most of our time deserves some recognition too. This is the place you brought your newborn home to, where you spend your sleepless nights and where you watch your family grow day by day. I know you are going to want to remember this time. Taking photos in your home helps to capture the little moments of having a new baby.
It might not feel like it, but the little moments of newborn yawns, siblings giving their new baby brother or sister a kiss and littleness of their fingers and toes matter. Those tiny moments won’t last forever and that is why it is so important to capture them when they are happening. The everyday routines with a newborn may seem mundane, but they are the little moments that you will look back on and remember you may have been tired, but your heart was absolutely bursting. In 20 years, you will look back on photos of your grown babies and be so thankful you captured such beautiful moments in the space that allowed those moments to happen.
Your House Doesn’t Have To Be Perfect To Be Worthy of In-Home Newborn Photos
The amount of natural light that comes in, the quality of your furniture, the decor that “isn’t quite right”- these are all qualities that fade to the background when you look back in gratitude on these days. What matters most is capturing moments of authenticity between you and your loved ones in a space that held this connection and sheltered you through the good and bad.
Please hear this too, your nursery doesn’t have to be Pinterest perfect for us to take photos of your newborn in it. However, I am sure you spend a lot of time and money gathering everything you need to make baby’s arrival as smooth as it could be. For that reason, in-home newborns sessions are a great way to show off your nursery! It will be a great way to show your babies when they are grown how you prepared for their arrival. The sweet little wildlife animals and other decor, children’s books lining shelves and the tiny hangers with onesies make a nursery feel so special. Why not take a few pictures of your baby in their new space?
